On July 30, 2026, a minimum of nine migrants died as they tried to reach the Spanish enclave of Ceuta from Morocco. A surge of people stormed the border. Spanish troops were sent in after local officials were unable to control the crowd. Ceuta’s authorities reported that about 40,000 migrants entered on foot, roughly half the city’s 80,000 residents.
The European Union said Frontex would assist and called on Morocco to leaving by ship and road. Spanish forces held the flow under control and strived to stop further deaths.
