The Toronto Maple Leafs continue to investigate possible trades involving forwards Nick Robertson and David Kampf, according to TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger.
Robertson has scored two goals and accumulated four points in 10 games this season. His role has fluctuated, appearing on the team's top line at times and also spending periods as a healthy scratch. In a recent game against the Columbus Blue Jackets, Robertson logged a season-high 17 minutes and 22 seconds of ice time, starting on a line with Auston Matthews and Bobby McMann while William Nylander was sidelined due to injury.
Kampf has spent the season in the AHL after being waived before the season began. He has recorded one assist in four games with the Toronto Marlies. The 30-year-old carries a cap hit of $2.4 million through next season, with $1.25 million counting against the Maple Leafs’ cap while he plays in the AHL.
"We know that GM Brad Treliving continues to explore the idea of moving both David Kampf and Nick Robertson," Dreger said on Insider Trading. "Now, the veteran David Kampf, who’s in the American Hockey League, it’s more about just getting off the money. For Nick Robertson, this guy is a bottom-six, he’s a top-six, he’s in the press box, he’s scoring goals. He’s a young guy who the Toronto Maple Leafs have time for and they are in no rush to move him out. If they were to get the right sort of return for Nick Robertson, it would be a player of a similar age."
The Maple Leafs remain patient with Robertson, seeking a deal that fits their long-term plans while aiming to shed salary via Kampf.
Author's Summary: The Maple Leafs are actively considering trades for David Kampf to manage salary cap space and for the versatile young forward Nick Robertson, but they are patient for the right return.
