The Education Minister has confirmed that financial support currently available to nursing students will not be expanded to other health-related courses. This decision comes after a review examining the additional costs faced by students in subjects like paramedic science, pharmacy, occupational therapy, and physiotherapy.
The review revealed that extra expenses were not just linked to clinical placements, but also influenced by factors such as course length, term duration, and different program requirements.
Education Minister Rob Ward stated that a “flat-rate” grant would not accurately cover the diverse costs encountered by students across various programs.
“For some students, support may be insufficient; for others, it may exceed costs and not represent good use of public funds.”
The statement was made in response to Deputy Inna Gardiner’s written question about extending financial support similar to the nursing students’ clinical component grant to other health-related disciplines.
The government maintains targeted financial support for nursing students, citing the complexity and variability of costs across other health-related courses, which a single flat-rate grant cannot fairly address.
Author’s summary: The Education Minister confirms that nursing financial grants will not cover other health courses due to varied cost structures, ensuring public funds are allocated according to each program’s specific needs.
