ERC Synergy Grants to Fund 66 Teams Tackling Major Scientific Challenges

Sixty-six research teams, comprising 239 scientists, will receive a combined total of €684 million in European Research Council (ERC) Synergy Grants to address some of the most demanding scientific questions across diverse disciplines. The initiative encourages collaboration among leading researchers, merging their expertise and resources to expand the frontiers of scientific discovery.

This funding comes under the EU’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme, designed to support pioneering research and foster international cooperation.

International Collaboration and Global Reach

‘Twenty-eight of the 66 newly selected teams include a researcher based outside Europe, mainly in the United States, but also Canada, Australia, Brazil, Ghana, South Africa and Singapore. Europe’s frontier research has never been so international. This global collaboration strengthens European science, gives our researchers access to world-class expertise and infrastructure, and brings leading scientists from around the world closer to Europe,’ said Ekaterina Zaharieva, European Commissioner for Startups, Research and Innovation.

Scientific Cooperation at the Core

‘Collaboration is at the heart of the ERC Synergy Grants. In our latest round, teams of researchers will join forces to address the most complex scientific problems together — this time, they are more international than ever. The competition was fierce, with many outstanding proposals left unfunded,’ said Prof. Maria Leptin, President of the European Research Council.

Summary

The ERC Synergy Grants emphasize international collaboration and groundbreaking research, uniting global scientists to confront critical scientific challenges under the EU’s Horizon Europe programme.
