French interior minister admits concern over police actions during eco protest

French Interior Minister Addresses Police Conduct During Eco Protest

France's Interior Minister Laurent Nunez expressed his dissatisfaction on Thursday with the behaviour of police officers during a protest against a giant reservoir in Sainte-Soline, southwestern France, that took place in March 2023.

Video footage totaling 84 hours, recorded by cameras on police body armour and released by the newspaper Libération and investigative website Mediapart, revealed officers insulting demonstrators and bragging about the injuries inflicted on them.

"I always remind people of the context: this was an illegal demonstration, where there was a great deal of serious violence against the police," Nunez told French broadcaster France Inter.

He added,

"The comments made are unacceptable, and there are actions that are clearly not in line with regulations. Obviously, I am not at all happy with the comments I heard or the actions I saw."

Inquiry Ordered After Footage Emerges

Following the release of the footage on Wednesday, Nunez announced an official investigation into police conduct during the protest. The demonstration resulted in injuries to more than 40 police officers and 100 protesters.

"I will never allow criticism of the internal security forces," said Nunez.
