Spain has selected 143 energy storage projects to receive capital expenditure support from an EU-backed scheme, totaling nearly 9 GWh of capacity. The government announced this at the end of October.
Spain’s environment minister Sara Aagesen announced that nearly €840 million (US$964 million) will be awarded through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). Initially capped at €700 million, the budget was increased by 20% due to strong demand.
Sara Aagesen emphasized the scale of interest:
“We have had to increase the allocation for storage due to the number of projects submitted: 1,750 applications.”
Selected projects are estimated to provide 2.4 GW of additional power and 8.9 GWh of storage capacity.
Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) plays a key role in managing this expanded funding, supporting Spain's clean energy transition.
Author's summary: Spain significantly increased funding to support 143 diverse energy storage projects, boosting the country's power capacity and advancing its renewable energy goals.
