African Civil Society Organisations Praise AU and SADC for Condemning Fraudulent Tanzanian Elections

The following African civil society organisations commend the African Union (AU) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) for their strong rejection of the fraudulent general elections and the violence that erupted in the United Republic of Tanzania.
We value the firm position taken by these regional bodies as a critical expression of Africa’s unified dedication to democratic governance, constitutional principles, and human rights.
Support for Tanzanian People and Democratic Principles
We applaud the AU and SADC for standing with the people of Tanzania and upholding the values established in the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance, alongside the SADC Principles and Guidelines Governing Democratic Elections.
Condemnation of Election Fraud and Violence
By denouncing the sham election and subsequent violence, these continental institutions demonstrate leadership, integrity, and courage during a period when remaining silent would have implied complicity.
The coalition expresses grave concern over reports of widespread electoral malpractice, the killing of Tanzanian citizens, intimidation of opposition candidates, arbitrary arrests, and the violent suppression of peaceful protests following the 2025 general elections.
Call for Non-Recognition and Fresh Elections
- Non-recognition of the illegitimate government formed after the fraudulent elections.
- Implementation of transitional justice mechanisms.
- Organisation of new, fair, and transparent elections.
