Several individuals became ill at Joint Base Andrews, located near Washington, D.C., after opening a suspicious package that contained an unidentified white powder, according to media reports.

The incident occurred when a person at the base opened the parcel inside one of the buildings, which was later evacuated for safety reasons. Those affected were transported to the Malcolm Grove Medical Center located on the base.

“As a precaution, the building and connecting building (at the base) were evacuated, and a cordon was established around the area,”

stated Joint Base Andrews in an official release, cited by CNN.

The building where the incident happened also houses the Air National Guard Readiness Center. Authorities confirmed that President Donald Trump frequently uses Joint Base Andrews for official travel.

“Joint Base Andrews first responders were dispatched to the scene, determined there were no immediate threats, and have turned the scene over to the Office of Special Investigations. An investigation is currently ongoing,”

reported the base officials.
