Teyana Taylor, 34, speaks out about the discussions around her role in the action-thriller One Battle After Another. She plays Perfidia, a member of a radical group called the French 75.
In the film, Perfidia becomes romantically involved with Bob Ferguson, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, 50, and also has a sexual relationship with Steven Lockjaw, portrayed by Sean Penn, 65. Her sexuality is portrayed as both a source of strength and vulnerability, as she becomes desired by both men.
Despite the film’s critical acclaim since its September release, some viewers have expressed discomfort with how Perfidia is sexualized by the two White male characters.
“Is that not what Black women go through? We are fetishized, especially by creepy mother-------.”
She told The Hollywood Reporter in an interview published on November 5.
“We are, unfortunately, the least protected people,”
Taylor added, explaining that her character’s portrayal reflects the harsh realities faced by Black women. She emphasized that the film is meant to show “what Black women go through,” acknowledging this as “a hard reality to accept.”
Teyana Taylor also mentioned she expected the film to provoke conversations on these challenging social issues.
