Florida has the tallest player in college basketball, Olivier Rioux, who stands at 7-foot-9. Despite his size, Rioux is spending the season opener on the bench, leading fans to wonder why he isn't participating in games yet.
Olivier Rioux is not playing because he is still adjusting to the speed, skill, and physicality required at the highest level of college basketball. The Gators chose to redshirt him during his first season to allow time for him to grow stronger and develop his game.
Although Rioux was present to witness the national championship and even helped cut down a piece of the net, he did not get any playing time.
"After redshirting as a true freshman last season, he's expected to get on the court in limited capacity this fall. He's unlikely to play much considering the defending national champions return their entire frontcourt, but he should at least get on the court in garbage time. (Todd) Golden already has considered using him to guard inbound passes, something Rioux did to perfection just before halftime against the United States in the FIBA U19 World Cup in Switzerland earlier this month. Rioux forced an errant pass that led to a turnover and a 3-pointer just before halftime."
Standing at an extraordinary height, Rioux's unusual stature earned him a place in the Guinness World Records. At Florida, he has gained attention not only for his size but also for becoming a viral video sensation.
Olivier Rioux’s journey reflects the patience and development required for a player of his exceptional height to transition effectively into elite college basketball.
