Albany resident Tylique Young was sentenced to 20 years in prison for a hammer attack on his pregnant ex-girlfriend that caused the death of their unborn son, a crime prosecutors described as “horrific.” The case drew strong reactions from law enforcement and the community because of the brutality of the assault and the vulnerability of the victim.
Prosecutors said Young attacked his pregnant ex-girlfriend inside his apartment on Orange Street in Albany, striking her multiple times with a hammer. The victim was approximately 27 weeks pregnant, and several blows to her abdomen ruptured her placenta, leading to the death of the unborn child and forcing doctors to provide emergency treatment.
According to the case file, Young held the victim captive in his bedroom for several hours, took her phone and prevented her from escaping or calling for help. Officials said he had threatened her for months, telling her to end the pregnancy and warning that he would kill her, the baby and even burn down her home if she did not comply.
Young pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including assault, kidnapping and robbery, and he was denied youthful offender status at sentencing. The judge imposed a 20-year prison term, emphasizing the severe physical and emotional harm inflicted on the victim and her family.
In court, the victim placed a photograph of her unborn baby at her feet while delivering a statement about the impact of the crime. She said that the attack “was done on purpose” and spoke about the moments she would never share with her son, such as teaching him to read, riding a bike with him or seeing him graduate, and most painfully, never hearing him call her “mom.”
“This was not an accident. This was not a misunderstanding. This was done on purpose.” “You took away so many moments I could’ve had with him.”
A brutal hammer assault on a pregnant woman in Albany led to the death of her unborn son and a 20-year prison sentence for Tylique Young, highlighting the devastating toll of domestic violence.
