Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment Review - IGN

The best Hyrule Warriors gameplay to date elevates a story that ultimately disappoints. Although The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is a masterpiece, it leaves many unanswered questions about the pivotal event in its timeline: the Imprisoning War that sealed away the Demon King Ganondorf.

One might expect Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment to serve as a prequel exploring this era in depth, as it follows Princess Zelda back to the founding of Hyrule. Unfortunately, for fans seeking comprehensive lore, the game mainly delivers the high-energy, over-the-top fanservice action the Warriors series is known for rather than an in-depth look at ancient Hyrule.

"The game consistently prioritizes gameplay over story, making it my least favorite narrative in the Breath of the Wild series by a wide margin."

Despite this, the positive side is that Age of Imprisonment offers the best combat experience the Hyrule Warriors franchise has ever provided.

The series combines The Legend of Zelda’s universe with Dynasty Warriors’ signature one-versus-many battles. The campaign, lasting about 18 hours, features dozens of familiar battlegrounds across the ancient version of Hyrule from Tears of the Kingdom. This includes engaging conflicts in the scenic golden Sky Islands and the eerie, Gloom-infested Depths.

Key Highlights

Author's summary: While the story struggles to satisfy, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment delivers the most exciting and polished gameplay the series has seen, making it a must-play for action fans.
