Former Aston Villa captain Gabriel Agbonlahor has argued that Liam Delap made the wrong decision by joining Chelsea instead of Everton during the summer transfer window.
Agbonlahor, speaking on talkSPORT, said that Delap’s development would have benefited more from regular game time at Everton. According to him, the striker faces limited opportunities at Chelsea due to the competition for attacking positions.
“At Chelsea, he’s not going to start ahead of the senior forwards. He would have got more minutes and confidence at Everton,” Agbonlahor noted.
Delap, a young English forward, completed his move to Chelsea from Manchester City in the summer of 2025. However, since arriving, he has struggled to secure consistent playing time under the club’s new management.
Agbonlahor believes that Everton, who are rebuilding their squad and in need of attacking options, would have been a much better place for the 22-year-old to gain experience and establish himself as a Premier League striker.
The pundit added that Delap still has potential but requires consistent minutes to grow. He suggested that a loan move might be the best short-term solution if the player continues to remain on the fringes of the Chelsea squad.
“He’s got talent, but he needs games. Sitting on the bench won’t help him improve,” Agbonlahor concluded.
Author’s summary: Agbonlahor criticized Liam Delap’s summer transfer choice, saying he would have flourished with more playing time and development opportunities at Everton rather than Chelsea.
