The head of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has cautioned that the most recent national climate plans "barely move the needle" on reducing future global warming.
The warning came as UNEP published its 16th annual assessment, which evaluates the difference between projected global emissions based on current national policies and the levels required to meet international temperature targets.
“While national climate plans have delivered some progress, it is nowhere near fast enough.”
The UN agency recognizes the Paris Agreement’s crucial role in lowering temperature projections and boosting renewable energy policies and targets over the past decade. Yet, it stresses that insufficient emissions reductions mean the world is “very likely” to exceed the Agreement’s more ambitious temperature goal.
Despite progress, UNEP emphasizes that current climate actions are inadequate to prevent significant global warming, urging faster and deeper emission cuts.
