Paden Ferguson, CEO of Padiano's Kitchen, and his partner managed to get the only two viral Bearista cups available at their local Starbucks, after arriving as early as 1 a.m. The store had just two in stock, leaving other customers frustrated.
In October, Ferguson discovered online that Starbucks was releasing its new lineup of holiday drinks and desserts, along with a special bear cup featuring a green beanie and a straw. Over the following weeks, social media filled with excitement about the limited-edition cup.
Ferguson and his partner initially assumed they could show up at noon on November 6 to buy the cup. However, as the launch day approached and demand grew online, they decided to check ahead and prepare a strategy.
On the evening of November 5, they mapped out five nearby Starbucks locations and visited the busiest one to gauge supply and competition. When they asked a barista how many bear cups were stocked, the answer was surprisingly low.
“Seven,” the barista said.
Ferguson’s local store ran out quickly, as only a handful of the coveted cups were delivered. Many customers expressed disappointment that Starbucks hadn’t stocked more of the popular collectible.
