Huawei’s sixth Innovation and Intellectual Property (IP) Forum, held in Beijing, gathered global experts to discuss how openness and robust IP protection can drive innovation and social progress.
Huawei Chief Legal Officer Song Liuping emphasized Huawei’s commitment to an open approach to innovation: “Open innovation drives society and technology forward, and it's in our DNA. Huawei respects the IP of others, and protects its own, including patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets.”
Song also noted Huawei’s patent licensing revenue in 2024 was approximately US$630 million, and that over the years Huawei has paid nearly three times as much in royalties as it has received in royalties.
In his keynote, Alan Fan, Vice President and Head of the Intellectual Property Rights Department at Huawei, highlighted Huawei’s role as a technology contributor in ICT. He stated that Huawei shares its technologies through open-source software, open hardware, patent filings, standard contributions, and academic papers. Fan noted that in 2024 Huawei published 37,000 patents, setting a new company record.
Format and context: The discussion centers on balancing openness with IP protection to foster innovation while maintaining safeguards for intellectual property, with Huawei presenting a strong stance in favor of open collaboration and active IP governance.
Author’s summary: Huawei positions itself as a pro-open-innovation leader, arguing that openness accelerates progress while safeguarding IP, backed by substantial patent activity and licensing flows.
