Gaël Faye’s Second Novel: Jacaranda

Eight years after the success of Petit Pays, Gaël Faye released his second novel, Jacaranda, a profound and emotional exploration of Rwandan history and memory. The novel spans several generations, highlighting the enduring impact of colonialism, the burden of silence, and the search for identity.

Award Recognition and Global Reach

Jacaranda was awarded the Prix Renaudot in 2024 and has been translated into twenty-eight languages. This wide translation effort was supported notably by the French Institute’s Publication Assistance Program (PAP). The book also won thirty international Choix Goncourt awards, a prize coordinated with the French cultural network abroad.

About the Author

Born on August 6, 1982, in Bujumbura, Burundi, Gaël Faye grew up between Central Africa and France. The son of a French father and a Rwandan mother, he left Burundi in 1995 to escape the civil war and the Tutsi genocide—an event that deeply shaped his work. Settling near Paris, he pursued music and co-founded the hip-hop duo Milk Coffee and Sugar with Edgar Sekloka, blending rap, slam, and Afro-jazz.

Cultural Contributions

In 2013, Faye released his first solo album, Pili Pili on a butter croissant, praised for its poetic and socially engaged lyrics. His debut novel, Petit Pays (2016), inspired by his childhood in Burundi, achieved critical acclaim and widespread popularity. Jacaranda, published in 2024, continues this introspective journey through lyrical and historical layers.

“In Jacaranda, Gaël Faye weaves a poetic interior fresco, where intimacy mingles with history.”

Gaël Faye’s work remains a vital reflection on memory, identity, and the legacies of trauma through generations.

Author’s note: Gaël Faye’s Jacaranda masterfully blends personal and collective history, revealing the deep scars and resilience of Rwandan memory through poetic storytelling.
