Idemia Smart Identity (SI) is currently in negotiations with Nepal and Armenia to supply biometric ID documents. This comes as the company undergoes integration following its acquisition by IN Groupe, which also led to a rebranding to IN Smart Identity.
Nepal is negotiating with Idemia SI to provide passport booklets as a temporary solution ahead of a supplier transition. A contract between Veridos and Mühlbauer to supply Nepal’s biometric passports is set to take effect in March 2026. However, the country’s stock of passports is rapidly diminishing. Idemia SI was the previous supplier, and it has filed a complaint with the Department of Passports (DoP), claiming the tender process was mishandled. The Nepalese Supreme Court dismissed the challenge in July.
The DoP has fewer than 170,000 passports left in stock, leading it to limit daily applications to 1,000, a significant reduction from the usual 6,000. To ensure a smooth transition, authorities are seeking 300,000 additional passports to maintain continuous issuance during the changeover.
In early November, Nepalese Prime Minister Sushila Karki met with Idemia SI CEO Antoine Grenier to discuss the situation. The government is also in talks with Veridos and Mühlbauer to finalize arrangements.
In Armenia, Idemia SI is nearing the issuance of biometric ID documents, though further details about the negotiations and timeline are not yet fully disclosed.
