Tilenga and EACOP Projects: Acting Transparently

Tilenga and EACOP Projects: Overview

To develop the Lake Albert oil and gas reserves in Uganda, we are advancing the Tilenga and Kingfisher projects, alongside the cross-border EACOP pipeline connecting Uganda and Tanzania. These projects aim to harness the significant oil and gas resources of the Lake Albert region, which are estimated at over one billion barrels.

Context and Environmental Considerations

The projects are situated in a socially and environmentally sensitive region, requiring careful measures to protect the environment and respect the rights of local communities. Both the Tilenga and EACOP projects are designed to minimize impact and follow the highest environmental and social standards.

EACOP: The Pipeline

The cross-border East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) will transport production to the Tanzanian port of Tanga. The pipeline is a joint initiative, built and operated by the EACOP company.

Environmental and Social Impact

Environmental and social impact assessments (ESIAs) have been conducted to meet the rigorous standards set by the International Finance Corporation (IFC). Additionally, third-party reviews have been performed to ensure the projects align with best practices in environmental and social responsibility.

The Tilenga Project

Located in the Buliisa and Nwoya districts of Uganda, the Tilenga project is led by TotalEnergies (56.6%), in partnership with CNOOC and UNOC. It involves the development of six oil fields and the drilling of around 400 wells from 29 locations.

"The projects for the development of the oil and gas resources of the Lake Albert region (Africa) and the cross-border pipeline are situated in a sensitive social and environmental context that requires special measures for the environment and the rights of the local communities."

Conclusion

The Tilenga and EACOP projects are essential to Uganda's oil and gas development, but they are committed to adhering to the highest standards of environmental and social responsibility, ensuring minimal disruption to local communities and ecosystems.

Author's summary: The Tilenga and EACOP projects aim to develop Uganda's oil and gas resources with careful attention to environmental and social impacts, adhering to international best practices.
