Researchers begin study investigating shared languages and identities on the island of Ireland

Introduction

A new research project aimed at exploring the shared languages and identities across communities in Ireland will begin next month. The project, titled LIFELANGS – A Living Observatory of Shared Languages and Identities, will collect valuable information from every county in Ireland, both north and south.

Project Overview

The research will examine the linguistic and cultural diversity of various communities across the island, contributing to a deeper understanding of the connections between language and identity. The project is being launched by a collaboration between Trinity College Dublin and Queen's University Belfast.

Launch Details

The official launch of the project will take place at an online event on Thursday, December 4th. In the lead-up to this event, the team is running a logo competition open to individuals under 18, with the submission deadline on November 25th.

Research Leadership and Funding

The project is being led by linguists Prof. Lorna Carson from Trinity’s School of Linguistic, Speech and Communication Sciences, and Dr. Aisling O’Boyle from Queen’s University Belfast. Earlier this year, the project secured €3.7 million in funding from the North-South Research Programme, which is administered by the Higher Education Authority.

Project Goals

Prof. Lorna Carson explained: “LIFELANGS will gather knowledge from the fields of language, education, and social sciences to produce practical, research-based resources for everyone. This project will build a better understanding of how to foster shared dialogues, improve social cohesion, and create greater inclusivity for a shared future on the island of Ireland. Our goal is to help build a more inclusive and stronger future for everyone.”

Conclusion

The LIFELANGS project represents a crucial step in understanding the diverse cultural and linguistic landscape of Ireland, offering insights that can contribute to more cohesive and inclusive communities.

Author’s Summary: The LIFELANGS project, led by experts from Trinity and Queen's University, aims to foster social cohesion and inclusivity through the study of languages and identities on the island of Ireland.
