A Kelowna Minor Hockey team, the U9 Huntrix, has received a unique invitation to participate in a scrimmage during the first intermission of the Vancouver Goldeneyes’ first-ever game. This historic event takes place on Friday as the Goldeneyes begin their journey in the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL).
The Huntrix will play an exhibition game against the Seattle Torrent during the intermission. Both the Goldeneyes and the Torrent represent the newest additions to the PWHL, marking a significant moment for the league.
The idea originated with parents Ashley and David Skermer, whose daughter Millie, aged 7, is a player on the Huntrix. After learning about Vancouver’s new PWHL team, Ashley Skermer envisioned a family trip to support the team, then expanded that thought to involve Millie’s team.
“My husband and I thought, what a great opportunity to go as a family to see. And then, we thought, well, what if Millie’s team went? How special would that be?”
Skermer shared the idea with fellow parents and the team, receiving unanimous support. She proactively contacted the Vancouver PWHL franchise, persistently inquiring about the possibility of the Huntrix being included in the opening day activities. Their persistence was rewarded with the exciting news that the girls would be playing at the Pacific Coliseum on Friday.
Ashley Skermer emphasized the importance of the occasion, stating:
“It’s just such an important celebration for equal opportunity and recognizing the importance of the vital role models for the next generation.”
This opportunity provides a valuable platform for young athletes and celebrates the growing momentum of women's hockey.
