Teen Vogue offers an exclusive first look and announces the eagerly awaited release date for the new season. Content Warning: This story deals with themes of abusive relationships, domestic violence, substance abuse, and sexual assault in Tell Me Lies. Spoilers for Season 2 follow.
Meaghan Oppenheimer, the showrunner of Tell Me Lies, understands the magnetic pull of a complicated, toxic romance. Across three seasons, the Hulu drama explores the turbulent eight-year relationship between two college students, revealing the lasting and painful consequences of choosing the wrong partner.
The result is a raw and often exasperating portrayal of young adulthood that few shows dare to depict. Oppenheimer shared with Teen Vogue during an exclusive visit to the Toronto set in August:
“I think that a lot of shows have flawed characters that are messing up, but still in a way that is easy to idolize. In real life, when you are in a romantic obsession, you are just so belittling of your own happiness and dignity. It can be really humiliating, and I think we show that in a way that you’re told not to in shows. I think a lot of studios or networks are scared to have female characters act pathetic, and the reality is that everyone acts pathetic sometimes."
The upcoming season promises a “very dark” arc for the character Lucy, hinting at even more intense emotional and psychological struggles.
Author's summary: The show uniquely portrays the painful reality of toxic relationships, exposing the often humiliating depths of romantic obsession with brutal honesty.
