Ian Leavers, former president of the Queensland Police Union, was found dead in his Brisbane home on Monday morning. The 57-year-old led the union from 2009 to 2024 and was later appointed Queensland’s first Cross-Border Commissioner.
Leavers was discovered deceased just before 10 a.m. in Mount Ommaney, Brisbane’s south-west. Police responded to a sudden death call around 9:50 a.m. and described the circumstances as non-suspicious. An investigation is ongoing.
After stepping down from the union, Leavers took on the role of Cross-Border Commissioner in August 2024, supporting border communities in Queensland.
“He earned the respect of Queenslanders for saying it how it was, and always standing up for the police service he loved,”
Premier David Crisafulli said. “He was dedicated, principled and driven to make a difference for this state. Queenslanders will remember his leadership during some of our state’s most tragic and defining events.”
The Police Federation of Australia described Leavers as a “long-serving and respected leader within the policing community for more than three decades.”
Ian Leavers was known as a fearless advocate who consistently spoke up for his colleagues and the communities he served.
