Ian Leavers, Queensland’s cross-border commissioner, has passed away at his home. He was found by police around 9:50 AM. While the death is not considered suspicious, investigations are ongoing.
Leavers leaves behind a decades-long legacy of dedicated service to policing and Queensland. He was appointed cross-border commissioner in October of the previous year, overseeing support for border communities during a crucial period of recovery after the COVID pandemic.
“Leavers has been a strong voice for the challenges facing communities and businesses along the state’s borders during a critical stage of rebuilding following the impact of the COVID pandemic,” said Premier David Crisafulli.
Leavers earned widespread respect for his straightforwardness and unwavering support for the police service. Premier Crisafulli added,
“Ian earned the respect of Queenslanders for saying it how it was, and always standing up for the police service he loved. He was dedicated, principled, and driven to make a difference for this state. Queenslanders will remember his leadership during some of our state’s most tragic and defining events.”
Before his commissioner role, Leavers had a distinguished career in the Queensland Police starting in 1989. He served in various units, including general duties, traffic, accident investigation, as well as plainclothes roles in Criminal Investigation Branch and Child Protection Investigation Unit.
He was also known for his work as a trade unionist, further contributing to his long-standing commitment to the police force and community.
