How 'I Love LA' Star Josh Hutcherson Set His Boyfriend Character Apart: Didn't Want to 'Just Be the Square'

How Josh Hutcherson Made His 'I Love LA' Character Unique

Josh Hutcherson joined Rachel Sennott’s “I Love LA” late in production, replacing the original actor after the pilot was filmed. Despite this, Hutcherson had significant input in shaping his character, Dylan, the longterm live-in boyfriend of Sennott's Maia, collaborating closely with Sennott and co-showrunner Emma Barrie.

Character Development Approach

Hutcherson shared with TheWrap how the team quickly aligned on their vision for Dylan, emphasizing they didn’t want him to be a stereotypical, boring figure.

“We very quickly all got on the same page, which was we didn’t want Dylan to just be the square, the boring, nothing guy. We wanted to find some textures to him that felt funny and dynamic and different, rather than something that we’ve seen before.”

They explored the core of Dylan’s personality, his desires, and the reasons behind his relationship with Maia. This collaborative process helped develop the character beyond what was originally written.

Changes From Pilot to Series

Initially, Dylan was portrayed by Miles Robbins in the pilot, but Hutcherson’s involvement brought a new perspective that reshaped the role.
