Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital will upgrade its West Building, including the Johnson Center for Pregnancy and Newborn Services, thanks to a $25 million gift from Bay Area philanthropists Carol and Ned Spieker. This renovation aims to enhance privacy for patients and increase comfort for families.
The donation was announced on October 23 by Stanford Medicine Children’s Health. It will support transforming the space to better serve mothers and newborns, allowing the hospital to accommodate more families from the local community and beyond.
“[Carol and Ned Spieker’s] generosity helps turn our vision for a completely reimagined space into reality — to serve and support more families from our community and beyond,” said Luanne Smedley, executive director of the Johnson Center.
“We care deeply about helping growing families in our community get the best possible care. We feel fortunate that they are healthy and thriving, and we want to help ensure that future generations of moms and babies receive the support they need.”
Stanford Medicine Children’s Health welcomes about 4,500 babies annually, nearly a dozen each day. Of these births, 70% are considered high-risk cases, highlighting the importance of the hospital’s modernization efforts.
Summary: The $25 million donation by Carol and Ned Spieker will fund crucial renovations at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, improving maternity and newborn care spaces to better serve high-risk families and the community.
