The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has mandated a 10% reduction in flights at 40 major airports, including Orlando International Airport (MCO) and Tampa International Airport (TPA), due to the federal government shutdown starting November 7.
Avelo Airlines, which operates flights from these airports, will be affected by the FAA's directive. The airline plans to review and adjust its flight schedules to comply with the FAA while minimizing disruption to passengers.
"We will carefully assess flights in and out of these airports and make thoughtful schedule changes that support the FAA’s efforts and minimize disruptions to customers," states Avelo on its website.
Kris Hallstrand, the airport director at Lakeland Linder International Airport, confirmed active discussions with Avelo Airlines regarding the flight cutbacks.
"We are working closely with our airline partner to discuss ways to help mitigate the impact of the airspace reduction. We are working to make ourselves available as an alternative airport at this time."
Currently, Avelo offers service from Lakeland Linder to eight destinations. None of these destinations' airports are among those required to reduce flights.
The FAA flight restrictions at Orlando and Tampa airports may result in increased use of Lakeland Linder International Airport by Avelo Airlines as an alternative hub during the government shutdown period.
Author's summary: The FAA’s 10% flight cuts at Orlando and Tampa airports could lead Avelo Airlines to boost operations at Lakeland Linder Airport, which is positioning itself as a viable alternative amid the restrictions.
