Virgil van Dijk appeared to have scored an equalizing goal before half-time with a superb header, only for it to be controversially disallowed. He connected with a Mohamed Salah cross to cancel out Erling Haaland’s earlier own goal. However, the linesman raised his flag for offside against Andy Robertson.
VAR official Michael Oliver reviewed the decision and upheld the call. The Premier League’s match centre explained:
“The referee’s call of offside and no goal to Liverpool was checked and confirmed by VAR – with Robertson in an offside position and deemed to be making an obvious action directly in front of the goalkeeper.”
Robertson was positioned near Man City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma but did not obstruct the keeper’s view of the header, which was unlikely to be saved anyway. It was actually Man City winger Jeremy Doku who was closer to interfering with the goalkeeper’s sight.
This decision prevented Liverpool from leveling the match just before half-time, a goal that would have boosted their confidence going into the second half.
The disallowed goal highlights ongoing debate over VAR interpretations, as Liverpool’s equalizer was ruled out despite questionable interference claims involving Andy Robertson.
