Riot tells us its League of Legends TCG Riftbound has 20 sets lined up already

Riot Games Plans Long-Term Future for League of Legends TCG Riftbound

We spoke with Game Director Dave Guskin about what lies ahead for Riftbound, the new League of Legends trading card game. Although many details, like the number of cards per set, remain undecided, Riot Games already has ambitious plans for the game's future.

Initial Launch and Long-Term Vision

Riftbound recently launched its first set, Origins. However, the design team has envisioned content much further ahead. Guskin shared that the team mapped out an arc for about five years, estimating around 16 to 20 sets by 2030.

"I think we got up to, like, 2030, so about 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 sets."

Plans in Early Stages and Flexibility

Despite these projections, the exact number and nature of future sets are not finalized. Guskin emphasized that many of the ideas are initial sketches, and the further out the timeline, the less certain the plans.

"Those are like the very sketches of ideas of sets. The further out in the future it is, the less confident I am that it's actually going to be that."

Experimentation with Game Design

Riot Games is still exploring what a Riftbound set should be, as the game takes its first steps. Guskin noted that, as a new game, they can't rely solely on what worked for other trading card games.

"We're a totally new game, and I don't know that I can say that what's worked for other TCGs will work for us."

The Riftbound team is actively experimenting and evolving the game experience as they develop upcoming releases.

Author's Summary: Riot Games envisions up to 20 sets for Riftbound by 2030 but remains flexible as they experiment with this fresh League of Legends TCG format.
