Channing Tatum Reflects on Moment with Benedict Cumberbatch

Channing Tatum recently looked back on a meaningful encounter he had with Benedict Cumberbatch early in his career, around the time of filming Foxcatcher. During a conversation with Deadline, the actor described the exchange as one that left a lasting impression on him.

He recalled that they met during the Oscars that year, sitting apart from others while talking about their craft and journeys as actors.

“I think we went to the Oscars that year. We are sitting literally away from everybody and kind of just having this conversation,” said Tatum.

Tatum admitted to being amazed by how deeply British actors like Cumberbatch immerse themselves in their roles.

“You just feel like you could pour yourself into any vessel, right? It’s beyond my comprehension of how British actors do what they do,” he noted.

According to Tatum, Cumberbatch’s response was both encouraging and humble. The Doctor Strange star shared his own struggles with confidence in his craft.

“You are so smart with everything. I think I’ve done a lot in my career with a sense of imposter syndrome,” said Cumberbatch. “I was getting jobs before I really knew what I was doing and just hoping to find it on the day.”

Tatum said that Cumberbatch’s openness and kindness helped him feel supported in that moment.

“He told me, ‘I’ve definitely trained like that, but you do something that I don’t think I could do,’” Tatum remembered.
