Sigourney Weaver, known for her roles in Aliens and Avatar, is set to join the Star Wars universe in the 2026 film The Mandalorian and Grogu. With three major franchises already to her name—Ghostbusters, Alien, and Avatar—this marks her fourth iconic series.
Weaver revealed she never planned to enter the Star Wars world. In a recent interview with Empire, she explained:
“It was not my intention to find a fourth franchise. I didn’t ever imagine that I would enter the Star Wars world.”
Her decision came after reading the script for The Mandalorian and Grogu. Weaver emphasized the evolving nature of Star Wars storytelling:
“What’s interesting about Star Wars now is they’re no longer trying to do the Star Wars to end all Star Wars. They’re letting the universe exist, and tell really interesting stories within that.”
This approach contrasts with previous years, when the franchise seemed to struggle with its identity, especially following reactions to Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi. Weaver points out that the franchise was once seeking a definitive, final Star Wars experience, which may have contributed to its challenges.
“They were always trying to find ‘the Star Wars to end all Star Wars.’”
This renewed openness promises fresh narratives within the expansive galaxy, offering new excitement for fans.
Sigourney Weaver expresses optimism about Star Wars' new direction, appreciating its move away from a single definitive story to a broader universe of diverse and engaging tales.
