After an offseason full of uncertainty, Russell Westbrook began his 18th NBA season with the Sacramento Kings, leaving behind his stint with the Denver Nuggets. Although he technically had a player option for the 2025–26 season, Westbrook clarified that his departure was not his own choice.
“The truth is that they didn’t want me back,” he said via The Denver Post. “Somebody else do.”
Westbrook explained that even though he could have picked up his player option for another year, the team directly told him not to. The veteran guard made these remarks after facing his former team in Denver, where he posted 26 points, 12 rebounds, and 6 assists.
During his time with the Nuggets, Westbrook embraced a backup role that seemed to revitalize his play, averaging 13.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 6.1 assists per game. Despite his strong performance, Denver chose to move in another direction.
“I thought it was great,” he said about his season in Denver. “I guess other people didn’t.”
When reflecting on his experience, Westbrook maintained a broader view of his career.
“Every part of this journey for me is always a positive impact.”
Russell Westbrook disclosed that leaving Denver was not his decision, as the Nuggets requested he decline his option despite a strong season in his supporting role.
