The first film in Peter Jackson’s ‘The Hobbit’ trilogy, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, has become the biggest Christmas release ever, according to Deadline. It premiered in Ireland last week and earned $138.2 million (€104.9 million) internationally within its first five days, across 56 markets.
The film stars Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, Ian McKellen, and Irish actors Aidan Turner and James Nesbitt. It surpassed competing releases like Rise of the Guardians and Skyfall—the latter still drawing strong box office numbers—to achieve the highest December opening on record.
Channel 4 has handed over the broadcast rights for the IAAF World Athletics Championships to the BBC after holding them for two years. The BBC will now air live coverage of the 2013 championships from Moscow.
The BBC already secured rights for the 2015 and 2017 editions. Channel 4 previously broadcast the events between 2011 and 2013.
Under the new agreement, Channel 4 is expected to keep the rights to the Paralympics, while the BBC will continue coverage of the Olympics, including the 2016 Games in Brazil.
