Antonio Brown, former NFL wide receiver, is being extradited from Dubai to Miami to face attempted murder charges related to a shooting that occurred outside a celebrity boxing event in May, officials reported.
Miami Police confirmed on Thursday that the 37-year-old athlete was transferred through Newark, New Jersey, where he was booked into Essex County Jail. A U.S. Marshals Service public affairs officer verified Brown's arrival earlier that day.
During the time he was evading capture, Brown posted videos from Dubai. Miami Police spokesperson Officer Michael Vega commented on these posts:
"He was kind of taunting us, saying, I'm safe here, and that's what we interpreted from those videos, but you know what, he was laughing then, we're getting the last laugh. No matter who you are, what power or what money you have, if you commit a crime in the city of Miami, we're going to identify and locate you and bring you to justice."
A warrant issued in June charges Brown with attempted murder using a firearm. The shooting happened on May 16 near Northeast 2nd Avenue and 67th Street outside the event venue.
An off-duty officer who was providing security at the event reported hearing gunfire and witnessed Brown engaged in a physical altercation with another person in the parking lot, as detailed in the warrant.
The high-profile extradition of Antonio Brown highlights Miami’s commitment to pursuing justice regardless of an individual’s fame or wealth.
