The upcoming film Wicked: For Good introduces two fresh original songs in addition to the familiar tracks from the second act of the Broadway musical. These additions will deepen the audience’s understanding of Elphaba and Glinda’s emotional journeys.
The second part of the movie adapts the latter half of the stage production, picking up after Elphaba, portrayed by Cynthia Erivo, soars into the sky with “Defying Gravity.” At this moment, she and her closest friend Glinda, played by Ariana Grande, have just discovered that the mighty Wizard, portrayed by Jeff Goldblum, is a fraud.
Director Jon M. Chu revealed that the sequel will not only revisit the beloved storyline but will also expand with newly written songs by composer Stephen Schwartz.
“Both witches are trying to find their way home,” Jon M. Chu said in a September 2025 interview with Entertainment Weekly. “Both of these songs are about how to do that, and it’s questions that I’ve always wanted to hear from them in the stage show, but never got to. We get to take our time and explore those questions.”
Both songs were composed by Stephen Schwartz, who also wrote the original Broadway score. Audiences were given a first look at the new numbers during NBC’s Wicked: One Wonderful Night special, preceding the premiere of Wicked: For Good in November 2025.
Author’s summary: The film Wicked: For Good enriches the beloved story with two new songs by Stephen Schwartz, revealing the inner worlds of Elphaba and Glinda as they each seek their way home.
