Graham “Richo” Richardson, former Labor senator, influential powerbroker, and political commentator, has passed away at the age of 76. Tributes are flooding in from across Australia following his death early Saturday, shortly after he had expressed determination to remain alive until his son completed his HSC exams.
Richardson served as a cabinet minister during the Hawke and Keating governments and represented New South Wales as a Labor senator for his entire parliamentary career. After leaving politics, he became a well-known political commentator and frequent guest on Sky News Australia.
Richardson had battled health issues for years, including bouts of influenza, pneumonia, and undergoing dialysis. Despite this, he vowed to stay strong until his son, D’Arcy, finished his HSC exams.
“When he had his big health challenge, he said to his wife Amanda, ‘I’m going to live till I see Darcy finish exams and his HSC’.”
2GB host Ben Fordham reported that D’Arcy completed his last HSC exam, French, on Thursday. Richardson passed away shortly thereafter.
“I’ve lost the love of my life. D’Arcy’s lost the greatest dad and Australia’s lost one of its best. He was a man ahead of his time.”
Amanda remembered him fondly in a heartfelt statement reflecting on his legacy and impact.
Graham Richardson was a significant figure in Australian politics and media, known for his dedication to family and country until his final days.
