Discovery in the Maria Geralda Sector
Earlier this year, the Maria Geralda sector—an unexplored region of Suriname—revealed gold concentrations far exceeding industrial standards. This find has ignited important discussions about Suriname's economic future and the environmental challenges associated with mining in this area.
Geological Significance
Structural geologist Vincent Combes describes the Maria Geralda district as “a rare convergence between intrusive and sheared systems within the same greenstone belt.”
This unique geological formation explains the deposit’s remarkable richness, covering a 400 by 500-metre anomaly. Samples taken from the zone showed that more than half contained over 0.1 gram of gold per tonne.
Surprising Richness
What started as promising indications quickly turned into an extraordinary revelation that even experienced field teams did not anticipate. Mining experts classify gold deposits by grade:
- High grade – above 10 g/t
- Medium grade – between 1 and 10 g/t
- Low grade – below 1 g/t
The Maria Geralda sector’s grade of 11.88 g/t over a 22.5-metre stretch places it firmly in the high-grade category.
