Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that the normalization process between Armenia and Türkiye is moving in the right direction. He emphasized that establishing diplomatic relations and reopening sealed borders is only a matter of time, highlighting the importance of sustained commitment to regional peace and stability.
Pashinyan expressed his views on the ongoing peace initiatives in the South Caucasus during a conference titled “Building Peace and Multilateral Cooperation” held at the Orbeli Center in Yerevan in November. The event brought together experts, academics, and journalists from regional countries, including Azerbaijan, demonstrating continued engagement among these nations.
“Three years ago, we had challenges but now we can say we have successes. The success story begins in 2024 when Azerbaijan and Armenia started talks for the delimitation of borders. The biggest success story is the signing of Aug. 8 agreement,” Pashinyan said.
Pashinyan recalled that the conflict between the countries predates their independence, with both Azerbaijanis and Armenians being unfamiliar with the true meaning of peace. He underlined the critical role of political leadership in overcoming deep-rooted social and psychological barriers.
“The conflict between the two countries had started even before their independence, and therefore both Azerbaijanis and Armenians do not know what peace means as it is an unfamiliar concept for them,” Pashinyan noted.
The historic declaration signed on August 8 in Washington by Pashinyan and Azerbaijan President İlham Aliyev, with mediation by U.S. President Donald Trump, serves as a cornerstone of the peace process and bilateral cooperation.
Armenia and Azerbaijan's border delimitation talks since 2024 represent a crucial step toward resolving their long-standing conflict.
