Léon Herschtritt: A Humanist Photographer

Recognized among humanist photographers such as Robert Doisneau, Édouard Boubat, Willy Ronis, Sabine Weiss, and Henri Cartier-Bresson, Léon Herschtritt captured the spirit of his time by focusing on human dignity and personal relationships with the world.

His photography spans scenes from Algeria, Africa, and daily life in Paris, offering a sensitive and deeply human perspective on childhood, women, and everyday moments.

“In photography, you can’t cheat; when I see ten photos by an artist, I know who they are. What matters for a photographer is what they have in their heart.”

One of his most iconic images shows two people sitting on the roof of a car in front of the Berlin Wall, taken in 1961 when Herschtritt was just 25 years old.
