The philanthropic arm of Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI), is transitioning from a broad social reform agenda to concentrate primarily on artificial intelligence (A.I.) and science.
Founded a decade ago to improve education, support communities, and cure diseases, the organization's priorities have now shifted. Zuckerberg and Chan announced in a joint letter that the foundation will go “all in on A.I.-powered biology.”
CZI's future efforts will focus on a network of research centers called Biohub, which aims to use A.I. to cure, prevent, and manage diseases. This marks a significant change from the initiative's original broad social mission.
When established in 2015, Zuckerberg and Chan pledged to donate most of their estimated $207 billion wealth to charity. Over the years, CZI awarded $7 billion in grants supporting causes such as immigration reform and criminal justice advocacy.
“The foundation’s next chapter will see it go ‘all in on A.I.-powered biology,’” said Zuckerberg and Chan in their joint letter.
Author’s summary: The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative has pivoted from broad social causes to focusing on advancing science and A.I., particularly in disease research through its Biohub centers.
