Walter James Jestings peacefully passed away on Sunday, November 2, 2025, at 92, surrounded by loved ones and great music. Born February 3, 1933, in Newport, Rhode Island, to Charles Stewart Jestings Sr. and Christie Gertrude Jestings, the place remains a deeply valued family home.
He is dearly missed by his three children:
- Jeff Jestings
- Joanna Phillips (Dan Phillips)
- April Brown (late Kevin Brown)
Walter’s grandchildren include Madison Collins (John Collins), Alexandria Brown, Dezmond Brown, and Luke Phillips. His great-grandchildren, who affectionately call him Grandpa Wallet and Popqua, are Walter Collins, Ollie Collins, and Cormac Collins.
He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews in Newport and beyond.
Career and Education
Walter graduated at the top of his class from the University of Rhode Island. He had a distinguished career in civil engineering and bridge design, eventually serving as Chief of the Bridge Bureau.
His employers and coworkers regarded him as fair, respectful, and possessing an unmatched work ethic.
Personal Life
Walter was happily married for 47 years to his hometown sweetheart, Sallye Ann Kendall, until her passing in 1996. The couple lived in Newport, RI, Columbus, OH, and Atlanta, GA.
