Prince Harry offered an apology and explanation following criticism over his and Meghan’s appearance at a World Series game in Los Angeles, where they wore Dodgers caps during a date night. The moment sparked debate among Canadians who saw it as an unexpected show of support for the LA team.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex attended the baseball game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Toronto Blue Jays. Meghan previously supported the Blue Jays, and King Charles, Harry’s father, serves as the monarch of Canada, which fueled the discussion.
Speaking at a dinner in Toronto dedicated to Canadian Armed Forces members, veterans, and their families, Harry humorously addressed the situation and apologized for the choice of headwear.
“I felt I had to face the blue-hatted elephant in the room and apologise to Canada for donning that cap,” he said, adding that wearing it was simply polite after being invited to the dugout by the Dodgers’ owner.
He lightheartedly added that he might have even worn another team’s cap to avoid light reflecting off an “ever-increasing bald spot,” quickly clarifying:
“Well, maybe not a Yankees cap.”
Harry reminded guests that Meghan lived in Toronto for years while filming the TV drama Suits. The city played an important role early in their relationship.
“As for my wife, she lived in Toronto for years and has deep affection for this city, so much so that many people around the world believe she’s Canadian,” he said. “So I think we can forgive a native Californian for her Dodgers loyalty, even if just for one evening.”
Prince Harry’s light-hearted apology in Toronto turned public criticism into a moment of humor and affection, highlighting both his diplomacy and the couple’s enduring link with Canada.
