Florida center Olivier Rioux, standing 7'9" tall, made history on Thursday as the tallest athlete ever to appear in a Division I college basketball game. The redshirt freshman entered during the last 2 minutes and 9 seconds of Florida’s 104–64 victory over North Florida.
Although Rioux didn’t record any statistics in his short appearance, his debut marked a major milestone for college basketball.
Originally from Terrebonne, Quebec, Canada, Rioux played high school basketball at IMG Academy in Florida. He was rated a three-star recruit in the 2024 class and considered offers from Florida Atlantic and Stetson before committing to the Gators in November 2023.
Rioux, recognized by Guinness World Records as the world’s tallest teenager, has represented Canada in several international tournaments. Notably, he competed at the 2024 U18 FIBA AmeriCup, where Canada finished in third place.
Following their win over North Florida, the Gators improved to a 1–1 record after an earlier loss to 13th-ranked Arizona, 93–87. Florida will try to move above .500 when they face Florida State on Tuesday.
