Sony Expands Cloud Gaming with PlayStation Portal
Although Google’s Stadia has faded away, cloud gaming continues to thrive. Sony recently enhanced this experience by enabling cloud gaming on its PlayStation Portal handheld device.
About PlayStation Portal
The PlayStation Portal is a handheld device similar to the Steam Deck but does not run games independently. It functions by streaming games from a user's PlayStation 5 console.
New Cloud Gaming Features
- From now on, all PlayStation Portal users can access cloud gaming without needing to connect to a PS5 console via Remote Play.
- Users can play select digital PS5 titles from their own library directly through cloud streaming.
- A broader catalog of PlayStation games is available through PlayStation Plus cloud streaming.
- The device receives a new “Cloud Streaming home screen” and a search feature to easily find games owned or accessible through PlayStation Plus.
Additional Enhancements
- Support for 3D Audio has been added.
- A passcode lock feature improves security.
- A network status page was introduced, which should have been included from the start.
