The Rivalry Series kicks off Thursday at 7 p.m. at Rocket Arena in downtown Cleveland, followed by another game on Saturday. Both the American and Canadian women’s hockey teams are top contenders expected to compete for gold at the Milan Winter Games.
After three days of practice at a suburban Cleveland rink, the two teams are ready for battle. This storied rivalry, known as one of the best in sports, now includes players who are teammates and friends in the new PWHL but will set aside friendships when representing their countries.
“Any time we put on our country’s jerseys, we don’t like each other,” said Boston Fleet defender Megan Keller from Team USA. “It’s going to be a bloodbath, especially these Rivalry Series games. You know, it’s not Olympic gold medal time right now, but it’s kind of how it feels when you’re out there.”
All games will air on NHL Network.
This four-game series will help finalize the rosters for the 2026 Winter Olympics. Official team rosters are expected to be announced between late December and early January. The opening ceremonies begin in February.
Thursday’s game marks the 193rd meeting between these two dominant teams since the first IIHF Women’s World Championships in 1990. Canada leads the head-to-head series with 108 wins, while the USA has 83.
Both teams regularly contend for the top two medals in international women's hockey, making their clashes significant previews for Olympic gold and silver.
