Florida’s 7-foot-9 Olivier Rioux made his highly anticipated debut against North Florida, setting a new record as the tallest player in college basketball history.
With the Gators leading 104-64 and the game nearly over, a crowd of 10,065 chanted “Oli, Oli, Oli” for the world’s tallest teenager, a fan favorite despite not playing since arriving in summer 2024. Coach Todd Golden finally put Rioux on the court with 2:09 left in the game at the O’Connell Center.
“It felt great. The support from everybody was amazing. Even on the bench and even with the fans. I’m very grateful.” — Olivier Rioux
Although Rioux did not score or record a rebound, he made history by surpassing 7-foot-7 Kenny George, who played at UNC Asheville from 2006 to 2008, as the tallest college basketball player to take the court.
“It’s another day, I guess,” said Rioux, who often draws attention across campus for photos, autographs, and conversation.
Rioux’s teammates were thrilled to see him finally get his chance. His close friend Micah Handlogten, standing 7-foot-1, joked about feeling small next to him.
“So much fun. When he was checking into the game, I kind of stopped him and was like, ‘Play with confidence.’” — Micah Handlogten
Author’s summary: Olivier Rioux’s debut for Florida set a college basketball height record, earning enthusiastic fan and teammate support despite limited court time.
