After releasing her album Lux, Spanish pop star Rosalía shared her experience of meeting her musical idol, Patti Smith, describing the encounter as “beautiful.” The meeting took place at the legendary Electric Lady Studios in New York, a moment Rosalía cherished deeply.
Rosalía explained in a BBC 6 Music interview that the meeting was arranged by Lee Foster, the studio's manager. She told host Nick Grimshaw:
“So we met because he wanted us to meet.”
Recalling the moment, Rosalía said,
“I remember walking down the stairs. I was wearing this white dress. And I was running a bit, thinking, ‘Oh my God, I don’t want to make Patti Smith wait!’”
She described Patti Smith's presence as radiant, saying,
“She had so much light in her face, in her eyes, in her smile. I couldn’t believe it. She even complimented my dress, saying, ‘I love your dress,’ then we spoke about the song and started sharing. It was one of the most beautiful things ever to meet her, because I really admire her.”
Rosalía's song "La Yagular" from the album Lux includes a 1976 recording of Smith in an interview where she said:
“Break on through to the other side. Going through one door isn’t enough, a million doors aren’t enough.”
Rosalía's heartfelt meeting with Patti Smith at Electric Lady Studios exemplifies the profound connection between artists across generations.
