The opening moments of Stranger Things Season 5 reveal a tense 1983 flashback where Will Byers confronts Vecna in the Upside Down. Netflix has offered a glimpse into the final season with the first five minutes, building suspense for fans awaiting the series conclusion.
During a virtual watch party, Netflix unveiled the initial sequence titled “The Crawl.” It begins deep in the Upside Down forest shortly after Will Byers’ disappearance in 1983. A de-aged Noah Schnapp appears as a frightened 12-year-old Will, quietly singing The Clash’s “Should I Stay or Should I Go” inside the Upside Down version of Castle Byers.
As Will sings, he suddenly hears unsettling noises before a Demogorgon crashes through his fort. Will fires a rifle and briefly escapes by climbing a tree, but the creature drags him down off-screen. The scene fades to black, switching to the Hawkins Library in the Upside Down.
“At long last, we can begin.”
The Demogorgon presents Will to Vecna, played by Jamie Campbell Bower. Emerging from darkness, Vecna initiates a terrifying ritual as vines lift Will against the wall and a tentacle approaches his mouth, releasing an unknown substance.
This chilling introduction sets a dark tone for the season’s final chapter, deepening the mystery and threat surrounding Will’s fate in the Upside Down.
Author’s note: The opening of Season 5 powerfully combines nostalgia and horror, promising an intense conclusion to the Stranger Things saga.
