236cm Teenager Becomes Tallest-Ever US College Basketball Player

Canadian basketball player Olivier Rioux, standing at 236 cm, made history as the tallest person ever to play college basketball in the United States when he debuted for the University of Florida.

The 19-year-old received a standing ovation as Florida triumphed 104–64 over North Florida. This appearance marked not only a team milestone but also a historic moment in college sports, given Rioux’s remarkable height — five centimeters taller than NBA legends Gheorghe Mureșan and Manute Bol.

A Historic Debut

Head coach Todd Golden faced mounting fan pressure during Thursday’s game to put the towering freshman on the court. As chants of "We Want Ollie" echoed through the O’Connell Center, Golden finally sent Rioux in with just over two minutes remaining, creating a moment that ignited the crowd.

"The support from everybody was amazing, even on the bench and even the fans. I think everybody supported me. I'm very grateful."
"It’s another day, I guess."

Fans and Players React

Rioux’s debut drew smiles across the arena, including from North Florida forward Trey Cady, who grinned while realizing he was giving up more than a foot in height to his opponent. Although Rioux didn’t touch the ball, his presence alone became the highlight of the night.
