Emma Dauster embraced a new opportunity to share exciting science with the public. Initially focused on brain research in graduate school, she expected to spend her career in the lab. Yet, she remained open to chances beyond the bench, applying for a traineeship with polymers and joining a student blog group.
Her path changed when she discovered a writer role at Complexly, the company behind SciShow, a popular science education program. Today, Dauster is a senior staff writer for SciShow, crafting quirky and surprising science stories that spark curiosity in audiences.
"In my fourth year of graduate school, I decided that I wanted to see if science communication could be a good fit since I enjoyed writing for the blog. I applied to the American Association for the Advancement of Science Mass Media Fellowship, and although I didn’t get selected, it was how I learned that Complexly produced SciShow and other science shows that I watched."
Inspired, she explored Complexly’s opportunities online and applied for a position. She was hired and began writing for SciShow while still completing her dissertation.
Starting as a general science writer, Dauster joined a small team and gradually took on more responsibility, developing educational content that brings science to life for viewers.
"So, I actually started my job while I was writing my dissertation. When I first started, I was a general science writer, and we were a much smaller team."
Her journey highlights the value of embracing diverse opportunities and following one’s passion for science communication.
